In the 1980's Joseph Bheki Ndlovu, an artist and illustrator, joined the Abangani Open School in Durban as a youth organiser and an arts and craft teacher. Abangani was formed as a response to the demand of Black students who wanted an art education in the city centre of Durban. Its premise was very similar to that of other organisations like it, such as the Community Arts Project (CAP) which were based in Cape Town.
